Joanna studied for an HND in Illustration at Art College in Cornwall and lives in Helston. Her family have always had some connections to Cornwall and she grew up on a farm near Stithians where she would often be out and about sketching the countryside and animals that were a part of the landscape.
Having always had a passion for the creative arts, Joanna enjoys experimenting with different techniques and has perfected a particular style of illustration using high quality coloured pencils. These images try to convey a sense of light, colour and atmosphere of Cornwall, particularly concerning the harbours and fishing villages that are a historic part of this unique landscape. Colour has always played an important role in Joanna's artwork as she believes it has an effect on mood and her pictures of Cornwall are often filled with colour and she hopes they are an uplifting and joyous celebration of the Cornish spirit.
Music and the visual interpretation of rhythm is also an impotant theme. Whilst listening to various styles of music, abstracted images are inspired that try to convey a sense of the inner meaning of sounds and musical harmonies. These images often start out with a recognizable shape of a particular instrument and as the picture progresses, shapes and colours are abstracted to give greater depth to the overall image.
Joanna also studies life drawing and enjoys conveying a sense of the rhythms and forms of the human body. Again, these are often abstracted paintings that have uplifting colours that are taken from preliminary sketches and studies rendered in charcoal or pencil.
Joanna is a member of the Creftow Co-operative Gallery based at Helston and also shows her work at Mullion Gallery. She participates in the Lizard Art Society's life drawing class and exibits her work at the Stableyard Gallery in Trelowarren.
