Diana has lived
in West Cornwall for most of her life, where she brought
up a family, graduating in 1999 from Falmouth College of
Arts (now University College, Falmouth). In her often detailed
paintings she takes pleasure in depicting the form, colour
and texture of things around her. These often take the form
of still life, though lately for the first time in many
years she is branching out into landscapes. These drawings
are in ink and watercolour are totally different from her
oil paintings.
While being representational
Diana interprets what she sees in her own way, often cropping
the image in order to find spaces, angles and shapes which
are interesting, and not perhaps otherwise obvious. Light
and lighting are very important to her.
Always interested
in sculpture she delights in the process of oil painting,
which in her mind is to carve an image out of the canvas,
creating the image and watching it emerge from its background.
This has led to her delight in painting shoes. She sees
them as portraits of the people who wear them. She did a
series of black shoes for her Degree show, entitled Cast.
After painting her daughter and son-in-laws' wedding shoes
for their wedding anniversary, she was persuaded to paint
wedding shoes professionally, under the name Twoshoes.
Diana's influences are many, ranging from Picasso (in papier
mache constructions) to Lucien Freud and Chardin in her
representational works. Her love of repetition comes from
her admiration of Monet and Lisa Milroy (who gave her her
first inspiration to pain a series of shoes). Her intrigue
in wrapped objects comes from Joseph Beuys and Christo. |
