My work on the
wheel is all made from a smooth, speckled stoneware body. I make jugs,
bowls and teapots with a traditional "feel" but, using my own glaze
combinations and variations in form and technique, I hope to imbue them
with a unique character.
My hand-built work is made using Scarva
crank material - a plastic yet coarsely grogged stoneware body. This
gives interesting textures whilst reducing shrinkage which, in turn,
minimises the incidence of cracking or splitting. I hope that my work
embodies the spirit of Cornwall by echoing its geological antecedents.
These are the colours of serpentine and kaolin; rust and copper. The
architecture of the old industrial past giving way to the inexorable
march of nature.Sharply defined man-made forms morph into organic fungal
shapes or flower heads. Goemetric surface treatment in stark monochrome
is juxtaposed with loose, freely poured glaze patterns to produce,
hopefully, a coherent whole.
Pots remain vessels and not sculpture
even though the function may, at times, be obscure.
Other work includes tile groups,
ceramic drums and planters. All plant pots are frost-proof and can
therefore be used outside in all weathers.
