The
area of Cornwall in which I live is West Penwith; it has
places that are ancient and evoke a history that is layered with
hundreds or thousands of years of human activity; relics of which remain
in the landscape.
I make sculptures from clay , dug from a Cornish clay pit situated on
the cliffs at St Agnes.
They are fired to a high temperature which makes them weatherproof. The
sculptures , called Haniwa, take their name from the sixth century
Japanese sculptures, used to encircle the burial mounds.
The character of the clay and the effects of the fire in the kiln are
allowed to speak, as I do not use glazes, preferring to add mineral
oxides to give earth colours. I will, occasionally, use raku and smoke
firing techniques to change the surface appearance of a piece.
