Morvah Schoolhouse Gallery - Hawk Paintings by Suzy Sharpe - May 2008
This beautiful Gallery has spectacular views over the surrounding West Penwith countryside but not from their newest exhibition space!!…..Regular exhibitor Morvah Schoolhouse Suzy Sharpe is currently showing a series of Hawk Paintings in the smallest room in the Gallery and Tearooms, to ensure that everyone has a full experience of art and creativity wherever they are in the Gallery THE LOO is being taken over by a succession of exhibitions of small works. One of the unusual benefits of a Loo as exhibition space is that you can if you wish enjoy peace and privacy when contemplating the work, which promise to offer a different experience if a little unconventional.

"Carnival"

As well as the manifestation of carnival spectacle itself, which
appears here draped in bright colours and social mockery,
this collection also presents a much broader carnival ethos,
one in which the whole idea is developed to extraordinary
lengths. On the one hand, the work seeks to subvert
authority through critical mockery, whilst on the other hand
preserving all that is dear to us through a form of affectionate
mimicry.
This show, then, is not about the artist, it is mainly about
you the audience. As well as the small collection of large
alters, there is also a collection of sixty smaller alters. Here,
the audience is asked to participate and interact with the
work, and all visitors to the gallery are invited to bring along
a small passport sized photograph of either themselves or
someone/something dear to them, which will then be placed
inside one of these mini alters for the duration of the show.
The alter represents a universal form of shared or personal
communication, and the vitality that emanates from this
process emerges not only from the individual invention of
the artist himself, but also from those who decide to interact
with his work. This is the true spirit of carnival, which is
universal in scope and directed to all and everyone. We not
only live alongside it, but we live in it. We are the carnival.
It is contained not in the individual, but in all of us and the
landscape around us.
This exhibition presents an irreverent and thought provoking
homage to the everyday and to the extraordinary:
the infiltration of the iconic by the symbolic through an
interplay of visual puns and equivalences which becomes
both subliminal and pervasive. Here we are offered a
colourful world turned inside out and upside down: a parody
of society, religion, human values and belief constructed
through painting, sculpture and film. It is ambivalent,
triumphant, mocking and deriding. It asserts, denies, buries
and revives. This is a strange and complex perception of
human life: in public and in private, where we are invited to
look at the world with different eyes, to see an alternative
truth in which a world of riotous and defiant colour remains
undimmed by the normal and prevailing view
